Medical treatment involves the medical management of a person to successfully fight disease or illness. Medical treatment usually includes: administration of medication, or use of an over-the-counter medication in prescribed strength. A person with a physical disability can receive treatment through specialized doctors known as a hospital-based doctor, or homeopathic doctor. Home treatments include physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, and social work. These treatments can be administered in person, or through the use of drugs to speed recovery. Medical treatment can either be administered by a health care professional, or self-administered by a person with a mental disability.

There are four types of medical treatment that a person with a mental disability can receive. The first is non-prescription medical treatment. This form of medical treatment is considered non-medical treatment, as it does not require the services of a doctor. This type of medical treatment can be administered by a licensed professional such as a nurse, physical therapist, or optometrist.

First aid and CPR are considering medical treatment, as they are conducted to save a life. First aid, CPR, and AEDs (automated external defibrillators) are available on the market today. There are regulations regarding the purchase and use of AEDs and other rescue equipment, which should be purchased according to local, state, and federal requirements. First aid and CPR training should be taught to all children, adults, and students under the age of 18 who have the potential to benefit from them.

Counseling is also a form of treatment, as it aids a person with a mental illness to understand and learn how to better control their symptoms. Counseling can be administered in group settings, individually, or through the use of media, such as television and the internet. This form of treatment is intended to relieve illness, teach self-care techniques, and promote mental health awareness. It is intended to provide equal treatment to all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. The equal treatment principle of the justice system mandates that all individuals receive equal protection under the law.

Legal counsel is also a form of treatment and is offered to individuals who may be involved in criminal proceedings and to employers who are faced with workplace harassment or discrimination claim. A lawyer may be appointed to represent a defendant in a court of law or to offer legal advice to an employer. In many instances, the lawyer offers a free consultation to potential clients so that they may determine whether they wish to hire a specific attorney. This practice is known as 'pro bono' or 'free counsel,' and has been recognized in many different jurisdictions. For example, in the United States, lawyers are allowed to advise defendants facing misdemeanor charges of low income, no fines, and no jail time.

When a person is faced with a substance use disorder or addiction, it may feel like the only course of action is to accept their fate, to cooperate with the court system, and to agree to rehab. However, the reality is that there are many options for treatment. Medications, counseling, therapy, social service referrals, and education may be all that's needed. In some cases, medication is a necessary component of treatment. A judge may decide that medication is necessary for severe cases; however, there are other treatment options available in the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace.

One of the most important requirements for any substance use treatment program, treatment plan, or treatment procedure is that the individual is willing to receive the treatment. Many individuals opt to take advantage of programs like Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous because they believe that it will help them fight back against their addiction. Full-on, inpatient substance abuse treatment, like those found in facilities like The Ohio State University Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center, is not for everyone. Those who are interested in receiving treatment but do not feel that they can commit to full-time inpatient care should consider substance abuse and/or mental health trato or referral program.

The treatment and rehabilitation programs offered at the university are not limited to those with substance abuse problems. The Center accepts all individuals regardless of their addiction history. It strives to provide an integrated comprehensive care solution that meets the needs of the client and helps them develop a sense of self-awareness, recovery, and responsibility for themselves.
